Wax Wings - Peripheryのだいすきポイント
こんにちは、Peripheryの楽曲「Wax Wings」の大好きなポイントを語ってみたいと思います。
ここ最近音楽を習い始めたのもあるのでこの溢れる気持ちを言語化してみます。読みにくい部分あったら申し訳ない。
ざっくりと和訳してみたはじめての記事はこちらから↓
Peripheryの歌詞はファンタジーと風刺と応援のごった煮で大好き、本人たちはそんなに真面目じゃないとインタビューで言っているけれど、洗練されていて聴き飽きない。
中にはなんかケチャップ・ウォーズって感じのMVもあるけど。
Wax Wingsだいしゅきポイント
その１：ボーカルSpencer Soteloの歌唱力
最後の"The machines are turning me"の"me"のところよ、この手のハイトーンにめっぽう弱いです。原点はRagnarok。
その２：曲中に雲行きががらっと変わり謎変拍子
ぴぴーっ！変拍子警察です！！！3:03からのこれは4小節ずつ4分の4拍子と16分の9拍子を行き来していますね？(有識者ご意見求む)ここの「暗雲立ち込めてきましたよ感」が好きです、そしてそれを切り開くSpencerの高音。そしてしばらく16分の9で進行してからいつのまに4分の4に・・？リズムが難しいこと。
その３：神話の引用 (参考：https://moo-arts.ssl-lolipop.jp/Greek/Icarus/Icarus.htm )
どこから語っていいものか難しいのだけれど、楽曲の終盤に出てくる"Just imagine the damage that's done, when you fly with Wax Wings in the sun"という歌詞。
神話に造詣が深くないから最初に聴いた時「何言ってるんだこれ？」という感じだったのだがどことなくPeripheryらしいファンタジーさを感じ取り、調べてみたらギリシャ神話がヒット。
イカロス(Peripheryの楽曲のタイトルにもいますね)が父ダイダロスが鳥の小さな羽たちを蝋(Wax)でまとめ、完成させた翼で空を飛び、閉じ込められた塔からの脱出を図るも「高く飛びすぎると太陽の熱で溶けてしまう」という父の忠告を無視し調子乗った結果羽が溶けてしまい、海に落ちてしまうというお話。
そして印象的なフレーズ"The machines are turning me"につながり、
本当に自分は幸せか？
不便のないこの生活、一見「満たされている」がどこか空虚な感じがしないか？
というように、テクノロジーで便利になり切ったこの現代の生活に対しての風刺を感じさせる。
こういった神話から引用してくるあたりFF好きなルーツが垣間見えてとてもいいね。
Wax Wings - Periphery 和訳してみた。
Peripheryっていうバンドはご存知？
ボーカル1人、ドラム1人にギター3人という癖構成。ボーカルのハイトーンと複雑なシャウト、多重に美しく重なるギターのメロディ、ドラムの変則的なシンコペーション、荘厳な雰囲気のオーケストラ。。。。どこを切り抜いても驚きに詰まったこのバンドが本当に大好きなんですよね。歌詞の現代への風刺と、背中を押してくれる感じもいい。改めてPeripheryが歌う歌詞を自分なりに和訳(所々意訳して自分の解釈ものせてできるだけ自然な文章にしたいです)してみます。

2023年10月現在の最新アルバムに収録されているWax Wingsですが、
どこか懐かしい感覚を思い起こすようなエフェクトのギターソロから始まり、特にボーカルのSpencer氏の高音が映える曲です。クリーンな高音を歌えば天使、血みどろな低音シャウトはさながら悪魔、いい声なんです。
太字の英文が歌詞原文で、その下の日本語が和訳です。文脈的に区切りのいいところで原文と和訳を上下に書いていきます。
